The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) jointly organized a Debate Competition on the occasion of Zero Discrimination Day, observed on March 5, 2025. The event aimed to foster awareness about discrimination and social biases while providing students with a platform to express their views on inclusivity and equality. The topic for the debate, “Is it right to judge someone by their looks?” was carefully chosen to encourage thought-provoking discussions on societal prejudices based on appearance. The competition saw the enthusiastic participation of six teams with 12 students, each presenting well-researched and compelling arguments. The participants defended their viewpoints with logic, examples, and persuasive reasoning, making the debate both engaging and insightful. They discussed how discrimination based on looks leads to stereotyping, inequality, and exclusion in various aspects of life, including education, employment, and social interactions. On the other hand, the teams supporting the motion argued that, whether consciously or unconsciously, people often make judgments based on appearances, and in some cases, these judgments are necessary. They presented perspectives from professional settings where appearance plays a role, such as the entertainment, fashion, and corporate industries. Additionally, they explored the evolutionary and psychological aspects of first impressions, suggesting that visual cues can sometimes offer insights into a person's behavior or intentions. The competition was not only a platform for debating skills but also an opportunity for participants and the audience to reflect on their own biases and perceptions. The event encouraged students to question societal norms and rethink how they perceive others. The competition was judged by Ms. Noorjahan Begum, Head, Dept. of HSS, and Ms. Gopika P. P., Assistant Professor, Dept. of HSS. The judges evaluated the teams based on the strength of their arguments, clarity of thought, subject knowledge, communication skill, rebuttals, and overall presentation. After an intense and engaging debate, Ayshath Riza and Noufal C.Y, from 2 nd year BCA secured the price for speaking in favor of the topic, while Mohammed Ibrahim Bahim and Mohammed Farhan from 1 st year B.Com emerged as winners for arguing against the topic. Overall, the debate competition successfully met its objective of promoting awareness, critical thinking, and meaningful dialogue on discrimination and inclusivity. The event left a lasting impact on all attendees, inspiring them to be more conscious and considerate in their interactions with others.
